Choosing TRX LED Headlights: Housing Replacement, Restoration & Why Bulb Kits Don't Apply
The TRX left the factory with full LED headlights — so 'LED conversion' bulb kits aren't the upgrade. Here's what actually applies: housing replacement, lens restoration, beam pattern, and TRX-specific fitment.

The TRX ships from the factory with full LED headlights — no halogen bulbs to convert. That single fact changes the entire buying decision most lighting guides get wrong: the “LED conversion bulb kit” aisle that makes sense on an older, halogen-equipped truck is largely irrelevant here. What actually applies to a TRX is different — housing replacement for damage or a different look, and lens restoration for the UV yellowing every plastic headlight lens eventually gets. This guide covers both, plus the fitment and beam-pattern details that matter, pointing you to new parts on Amazon and used/OEM lighting on eBay Motors. For everything beyond the headlights — light bars, ditch lights, rock lights, amber grille markers, and taillights — see the full best TRX lighting upgrades rundown.
Skip the “LED conversion” bulb kits
Search “LED headlight bulbs” for almost any truck and you’ll get a wall of halogen-to-LED conversion kits — a plug-in LED bulb designed to replace a halogen bulb inside an existing reflector or projector housing. That product category exists to solve a real problem: dim, yellow-white halogen output. The TRX doesn’t have that problem, because it never had halogen headlights to begin with. A conversion bulb has nothing to convert here, and kits built around a halogen bulb base aren’t engineered for the TRX’s sealed factory housing. If a listing is marketed as an “LED upgrade” or “halogen to LED conversion” for a Ram TRX, treat that as a mismatch, not a bargain.
What actually applies to a factory-LED truck
- Full housing replacement. The right move for physical damage — a cracked lens from a rock chip, water intrusion, a broken mounting tab — or if you want a different beam design or aftermarket look. Confirm beam pattern and cutoff on any replacement; see below.
- Lens restoration. The right move for cloudy, hazy, or yellowed lenses with no physical damage. Every clear-coated polycarbonate headlight lens degrades under UV exposure over years of sun, regardless of what’s generating the light behind it. A wet-sand-and-polish restoration kit followed by a UV-blocking clear coat restores clarity and real light output at a fraction of a new assembly’s cost.
What actually matters
- Beam pattern and cutoff. This is everything on a replacement housing. A good one lights up the road without blinding oncoming traffic. A bad one scatters glare and gives you less usable light than the factory unit it replaced.
- Color temperature. The factory LEDs run close to 5000–6000K (bright white). Match that on any replacement — higher “blue” color temperatures look flashy but scatter more in rain and fog and give you less usable light.
- Fitment. The TRX’s headlight housings are part of its unique, widened front fascia — they do not automatically share part numbers with a standard Ram 1500. Confirm the listing explicitly names the TRX (see our year-by-year fitment guide for the full carries-over/doesn’t-carry-over breakdown), not just “Ram 1500.”
- Aim. Always re-aim after installing any replacement housing.
Housing replacement vs. lens restoration
| Full housing replacement | Lens restoration kit | |
|---|---|---|
| Fixes | Cracked lens, water intrusion, broken mount, wanting a different beam/look | Cloudy, hazy, yellowed lens with no physical damage |
| Cost | Highest — a full assembly | Lowest — a kit you apply yourself |
| Confirms TRX fitment? | Must confirm before buying — TRX-specific housing | Not a fitment concern — works on your existing housing |
| Changes beam pattern | Possible, for better or worse — verify cutoff | No — restores the factory beam, doesn’t change it |
How to buy
- New restoration kits and replacement assemblies: Amazon Automotive — browse the lighting category.
- Used or OEM housings and factory assemblies: eBay Motors, via the search buttons above — often listed with a part number, which is the most reliable way to confirm TRX fitment on a used housing.
Pair your headlight work with LED fog lights and off-road auxiliary lighting — a bumper light bar, ditch lights, or a chase light for the bed — and your TRX will light up the trail long after the pavement ends.
